Ram Rebel TRX Concept
The truck world is well known for its ongoing rivalries and competitions, and Ram and Ford are adding yet another flame to the fire.
Earlier this year, details about Ford’s 2017 F-150 Raptor started making themselves known as the model revs up to hit showroom floors, so Ram fired back by unveiling the Ram Rebel TRX (a audible play on words with t-rex, although Ram officials say the coincidence is unintentional), an aggressive and striking concept truck that turned heads and stole some of Ford’s thunder at the Texas State Fair in October. The TRX boasts a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 Hemi engine with a paddle-shifted eight-speed automatic transmission, and its styling is definitely in the vein of the beast with which it shares a name.
“The Rebel TRX concept can devour the roughest terrain at more than 100 mph and never look back,” says Mike Manley, head of Ram Brand at FCA Global. And when it comes to devouring, it’s worth remembering that the Tyrannosaurus rex in Jurassic Park more than took care of the raptors. But we digress.
Looking at the F-150 Raptor, the 2017 model will feature a twin-turbocharged V6 with a 10-speed automatic transmission that produces 450 horsepower and 510 foot-pounds of torque. Compared to the Rebel TRX’s 575 horsepower and comparable 500 foot-pounds of torque, the Raptor comes close, but doesn’t quite outdo the TRX.
“This project was a moonshot,” says Mike Gillam, design manager for Ram speaking on the TRX. “I like to think it’s what the Rebel should have been.”
For now, it’s uncertain when or if the TRX will ever proceed to production. For now, the specialty truck’s jacked up and dominating presence is definitely worth the entire head turning it’s been receiving since its debut at the Texas State Fair.
